Reclaiming Public Space
After helping save rent control and leading a successful grassroots campaign against the notorious, gentrifying landlord CitiApartments, PAW/HAVOQ continues to resist the displacement of our communities and the criminalization of our public spaces. Our “Homos Not Condos” working group has been renamed “Reclaim Public Space” to reflect our vision of a San Francisco with accessible housing and public spaces that we can thrive in together, free of economic violence and state policing.
This year we’ve taken action alongside queer and trans youth against proposition L (which criminalizes sitting and lying on public sidewalks) and marched together through the Castro to challenge apathy toward queer youth homelessness. We’re currently taking on a direct action campaign to transform our public spaces.
Check out the latest news about Pride at Work/HAVOQ’s efforts to resist privatization and reclaim public space!

SFPAW/HAVOQ opposes tasers because they contribute to and [...]

Dear Mayor Lee: We write to express our alarm and deep dismay about your comments to reporters on June 27, 2012, in which you stated you are considering implementing a “stop-and-frisk” policy in San Francisco, similar to the highly controversial “stop-and-frisk” policies in New York City and Philadelphia. Together with community advocates and civil and [...]

International Workers Day has always been one of our favorite holidays– for some of us it’s about celebrating the collective power we hold when we recognize the value of the work we do– paid or unpaid, visible or not. For some of us it’s about standing together as immigrants and allies, documented and undocumented, and [...]
